Advanced MBA degree programs (dual degrees) address the needs of students whose career goals may bridge academic disciplines and require expertise in multiple areas. By combining expertise in two areas, graduates bring a unique set of qualifications to their job. While students can earn a dual graduate degree in almost any discipline, the most common combination is an MBA degree combined with another graduate discipline. In general, a dual degree requires one year less than it would take to pursue the two degrees separately, reducing the time necessary earn the two degrees from typically 4 - 5 years to 3 - 4 years. Full- and part-time study options are available in many instances. The program may be offered as a cohort where all students take the same classes on an accelerated schedule.
To be admitted to an MBA dual degree program, applicants typically must apply and satisfy the admission requirements of the MBA program at the graduate business school and the other graduate school that offers the program of their choice. Often, but not in all cases, there is a single, streamlined application form and process for the dual degree program. However, each program makes an independent admission decision. Often, but not always, applicants are required to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), and, if appropriate, advanced subject tests.
While dual degrees can often be taken at the same institution, it is not uncommon that dual degrees will be offered by two separate institutions.
